What is ADHD?

ADHD starts during childhood but continues to cause problems throughout adulthood. It’s a behavioral disorder that presents two types of issues.

Primarily hyperactive/impulsive ADHD

Hyperactivity is the need to be doing something all the time. This triggers behaviors such as constant fidgeting because you can’t sit still and impatience that makes you seem rude and uncooperative. Impulsiveness causes you to act without thinking and take unnecessary risks.

Primarily inattentive ADHD

Inattentiveness is a lack of focus or concentration that makes it hard to complete tasks. You might be known for daydreaming and failing to respond when people talk to you because you’re in a world of your own.

Many people with ADHD have both these types of problems. They cause children to get into trouble at school and home and cause difficulties with relationships and careers as people get older.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

If you have ADHD symptoms, it’s important to get a professional diagnosis from Heritage Wellness. Other behavioral and mental health disorders could cause similar problems but require different treatment.

ADHD symptoms are behaviors any child could display. Most children are difficult, headstrong, unruly, and inattentive at times or certain ages. However, with ADHD, the problems usually start before a child reaches 6 and don’t go away.

Only an expert can confirm ADHD as the root cause of any behavioral problems. Heritage Wellness™ has experienced providers who specialize in helping children and adults who are struggling with ADHD or haven’t received a diagnosis.

How is ADHD treated?

At Heritage Wellness™, patients receive an individualized treatment plan. Stimulant medications play an essential role in helping many people with ADHD. They boost the production of chemicals in your brain that help you moderate your behavior. If stimulants aren’t suitable for you, other medications might help.

Sometimes, people have problems like depression and anxiety alongside their ADHD, so antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications might be beneficial. The other primary approach to helping people with ADHD is talk therapies.

Behavioral therapy helps you recognize the triggers for your unwanted behaviors and learn to adapt your thoughts. Some patients might benefit from psychotherapy, which explores the emotional problems that can make symptoms worse. Support with education and finding suitable employment can also make a big difference to your quality of life.

With help from Heritage Wellness™, you can be happier and achieve your goals. To benefit from the team’s expertise in treating ADHD, call the office or book an appointment online today.
